Essay

Who gets to own the African creative infrastructure?

How a communications career, a fiction habit, and a business-school detour turned into a thesis about who gets to own African creative infrastructure.

Every few months, someone announces that African creativity is having a moment. There is a summit, a fund, a glossy report with a one word title, and a room full of people nodding at a future that somehow always seems to require their permission to arrive. I have sat in enough of those rooms to notice the thing nobody says out loud: the moment is real, but almost none of us own the infrastructure it runs on.

The rest is on its way.
